Why Is My AC Not Cooling? 7 Things to Check

Before you call for service, a few simple checks can solve the problem — or help you explain it.

1. Thermostat

Set to Cool, below room temperature, with fresh batteries if it uses them.

2. Filter

A clogged filter chokes airflow and can freeze the coil. See how often to change your AC filter.

3. Breakers

Check the AC breaker in the panel and the switch near the indoor unit.

4. Outdoor unit

Is the fan spinning? Clear plants and debris from around it.

5. Ice

Ice on the lines or coil means turn the system off and get it checked.
